there are a total of 8 balls. one is heavier/lighter, other 7 are equal. using a balance, determine which has different weigh within 3 tries.

You forgot that there's supposed to be a scale involved :-) Take four of the balls, and put them in one side, the other four in the other side. The heavier ball is in the heavier side, so the other four are not the ball you're looking for; throw them away. Of the remaining four, put two in one side and two in the other; same logic - throw the lighter ones away. Now you have only two left; put one in each side, and you will know which is heavier :-) Same logic works for the lighter one.

Put 4 on each side.
Take 4 from lighter/heavier side.
Put 2 on each side.
Take 2 from lighter/heavier side.
Put 1 on each side to find lighter/heavier one.

1. Put 4 on each scale and remove the 4 which are the lightest. 2. Put 2 on each scale and remove the two lightest. 3.Put one on each scale the heaviest is the odd one.
