Although most answers addressed your question, they may have missed the source of your misunderstanding - one common among residents of the U.S.

The United Kingdom is the true name of what we in America often erroneously refer to as "England". It consists not only of Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, but also the "Overseas Territories" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_overseas_territory . Also, they are "in federation" with the "Crown Dependiencies" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_dependency , which technically are *not* part of the United Kingdom.

"England" is simply one country within the UK http://www.atlapedia.com/online/maps/political/British_Isles.htm .

"Britain" is vague, but probably most commonly refers to Great Britain, the largest of the British Isles. The British Isles include Ireland, the Isle of Man, and a plethora of other islands near to Great Britain.

I hope this helps clear things up.

UK stands for the United Kingdom. It consists of four countries - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each are very distinct and the last three have one thing in common, they all have a feudal dislike of England (I am English).

We are all part of Great Britain ..... you might have seen GB from time to time, it's the same place as UK. A word of advice though, although we will all accept being called British (though there is a new trend for clinging to our individual nationalities), a lot of Americans can risk death by asking a Scot, Welsh or Irish person what part of England they come from ... that is the biggest no-no you can make.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Great Britain consists of, in order of importance, Wales,Scotland and England(some might think I've got the order wrong but I'm in Wales and I'm writing this).Unless your surname is Spanish you are probably descended from Britich or Irish great great grand parents. But it's nothing to worry about.Good Luck.
