I would never give up. I would try, and try, and try again until I succeeded to the utmost of my ability. Unless it was gambling in cards, slot machines, etc.
But if it were something that would make me succeed in life, such as an occupation, or career I would keep plugging at it. Also when it comes to helping people when they are ill. Even if it were a terminal illness, or they were addicted to alcohol, or drugs. I would always be there to give them moral support.
If you did your utmost, and it does not turn out the way you expected it means there is always another opportunity around the corner, and you have the satisfaction that you did your best.

There are so many cases that could made against this from politicians to war mongreals to common peole that failed lost of time.
But the one that I'm going to use is Micheal Jordan. He failed from the start he wasn't allowed to play high school the ball the first year he tried out. He was picked first draft.
Another stat about MJ is that he missed more shots in his total carrer then he made. Now most people that miss 40 shots out of 50 would not be able to come back from something like that. Not that I know if that last one was true but he could have a bad first half and come back and then he was MJ. The player that seemed to make every shot.
I think if you don't make it you're first try and the hunderth try then why give up. It's all just practice and a test to see if you really want you're after. For every major success there's a thousand people that fail.
Almost every year or so people try to re-make the airplane that flew at Kitty Hawk and they fail. Why do they fail what why could those to brothers make that plane fly. Well maybe it's more then just trying on ones part and maybe theres a thing called luck. And luck might have more to do with failing. It was fate that some people were able to be so great. It was luck that MJ was to grow up to be so tall that he was born in the states and not a child soldier in some other country.

You should try until you figure out that any extra benefit you get from succeeding will not be as much as the extra cost you have to put out.
As Clint Eastwood said 'A man's got to know his limitations'.
So you fail, you learn from that failure and you move on.
Part of the equation as to how many attempts you give something before considering it a 'learning' experience is just how bad you want it. But to want something so bad that you'll never give up, even though you have some other option, is just lunacy. So you'd love to be a pianist, but your fingers just aren't the right 'type'... you may get a little less joy from playing a sax, but at least you'll have more joy from being successful at that than getting only frustration from the piano.
This is especially true in athletics, where many athletes give up a sport they truly love to take up a sport they love less but due to physique or physiology can play much more successfully.
Peace

Let me take an extreme and ask YOU.
Suppose you are drowing in a pool and want to save yourself, how many times would YOU try and then give up? Would you give up at all? Such situations are Issue based and not based on any theory. In life , as we go along , there do come issues that are life threatening, critical and challenging. In such situations we should keep trying but not the same thing. We should try different methods to come out of it.
The other Not-So-Critical issues have to taken not with a Do or Die basis but we simply give our best shot . That is it.One of the greatest philosophies of the East emphasizes this clearly. It says: You have a right only to act. You have absolutely no right to expect the fruit of your action. If you act this way you have no sorrows."
sounds impractical but if we analise deeply we will realise the truth behind this profound statement.

I don't think it's "trying & failing;" as you pursue whatever you wish to accomplish, there may be many "obstacles" that require you to re-think, choose alternatives & keep on trucking. I persevere in what others may consider impossible tasks. I'd only "give up" when it's clear I need to cut my losses. For example, someone owes me about $40,000., & a judgment is without question, but he hasn't any assets; can't even put a lien on his home or property because he's mortgaged to the hilt, & lenders would have first lien. Why pay attorney's fees to beat a dead horse? If I give something my best shot/s, & it doesn't turn out, it's because there's no way it could. That's what it means. Just put all that work behind & move on.

Hi Rena! It depends on that which you are trying to do. If it is a spiritual practice never give up, you will get there & benefit with each attempt. If it is something of the world a good rule of thumb is if it its just too convulted & obstacles keep popping up, you might want to consider it just was not meant to be. At times I have found that if I wanted to do something that has it's roots in this world & it is somthing I am guided by the Spirit to do, the way is made easy & it all just falls easily into place.

well, i think that it's not about the times you tried, but how well you tried. of course, you have all the time in the world to try and do it. it only ends when your resolve and determination leaves you. time is not the problem, then, but your conviction and faith in yourself. giving up is always an option, but it's the last on the list. i never give up, if i do, all that i attained is all wasted. that's why i keep trying and doing. i want my line of success to grow longer, as long as i can. i don't want the line to end. and if i give up on something, there's always a plan B, which doesn't really mean that i'm giving up, i'm just changing my tactics. =) if it doesn't turn out the way i want too, then that's just too bad, but my world doesn't have to stop spinning because of that. it's only a small part of a bigger aim. when give my best, i give it 100% for all the challenges i face. if i don't give it my best, then why the hell did i try for? =) if

I don't think there is a set number of attempts at anything in which you need to quit. If I am endeavoring to become a published author (which I am trying very, very, hard to do) I should give up after my first two novel were rejected early and often by anyone who came in contact with my manuscripts. I have another story which I am peddling to agents right now, and the early returns suggest that I may have to go through another long round of rejections. however, I am not going to give up. Someone out there is going to like my story and publish it. or, I will write another one after this one which will be my personal masterpiece and become a bestseller. Who knows? Quitters quit, and they quit early and often. There is no amount of times one has to try and fail at something. When you continue to fail, change your methods, or try some other way to achieve your goals.

The best attitude is never surrender whatever the consequence. Risks are always there but you have to face and confront all the trials in life. Again never ever surrender. As you said it you will not succeed if you give up. Always hold on to God. I cannot answer your negative question because i am a positivist. I always plant positive thoughts in my mind. If you easily put your way down there will be no chance for you to attain success in life.

It really depends on what you're dealing with. If I try to help someone, I generally give them one chance. I don't need it. If I try and fail, then I move on. On the other hand, if there is something I am really committed to and really need, then I keep trying. It's just a matter of whether I need it more or it needs me more. If I am the charitable one, then I'm not going to waste any more time than I already have.
