My wife and 2 kids are arriving in Narita at 16000 hrs and fluying on the next day at 1700 hrs. Is it worth travelling down town to stay overnight, or should we aim to stay local to the airport ?

There are no hotels in the airport..not like what we have in the states. You will have to go into Tokyo for a place to stay overnight.

Staying in Narita would be the best idea. If you have time to kill in Narita you can always go to Narita-san temple or just walk around town. I have stayed at the Narita Holiday Inn and it was nice to have a swim in the pool after a long flight. The Holiday Inn and the other hotels in the immediate vicinity of the airport have shuttle buses. If you want to stay in Narita city itself then you could catch the train from the airport to Narita station. Narita hotels are a good value because they had to cut prices since the connections to Tokyo improved.

I don't think it's worth going into downtown Tokyo with all the luggege and two kids.

I suggest staying near the airport and taking a half-day trip into Tokyo, if you're not too tired. If you've never in Japan before, just strolling in the nearest town (which would be Narita) will be an interesting exprience. While it is no tourist destination, it will be different from what you're used to.

Narita Airport is far away from downtown Tokyo. It takes a couple of hours and some money to go to downtown.

Anyway, you cannot get out of the airport unless you have an air ticket with which you can stopover in Tokyo.

If you cannot stopover in Tokyo, you should stay in the airport. Narita has dayrooms with a bed and shower. You can sleep or take a shower to refresh yourself.
