I'm from Bozeman, Montana, USA going into my senior year of highschool. At the end of my senior year some friends and I are planning on taking a backpacking trip through Europe. We are trying to make it as cheap as possible, but I'm having trouble coming up with creative ways to get to Europe (anywhere in Europe) from Bozeman, Montana. Anyone have any HELPFUL ideas??

I've been travelling cheaply between the US and Europe for the past 11 years, so I'll boil down your best options for you:

1. Student/youth tickets. If you're under 26, you qualify for fares from http://www.travelcuts.com and http://www.statravel.com These are "consolidators" meaning good prices usually for peak season (outbound Jun-Aug) with cheaper fees if you have to change a travel date.

2. Going from a larger airport. In your case, it might be cheaper to go from Seattle or Denver if you can get a relatively inexpensive flight hop with Horizon Air, for example. If you somehow had cheap access to Calgary, I'd recommend that as well due to cheap flights to the UK from Canadian-Affair.ca.

3. Be flexible. The earlier you're outbound in June, the better chance of cheaper airfare. I have no idea when your school finishes, but if by chance you're outbound before June 1, then there's even better chance for cheaper airfare because of seasonal price increases that usually start June 1 (some airlines not until later in June). So when you check STA and Travelcuts, play with the dates if you can.

LON, MAN, DUB, SNN, FRA and the major cities will likely be cheapest (PAR, AMS, MAD, ROM, ZRH, MIL, BER, LIS, etc.). Try http://www.farecompare.com -- "Getaway Maps" and "Research Cheapest Fares" to get an idea of cheapest airports to use. They're also good for tracking down cheapest seats (but compare with the others).

4. Run your itinerary through http://www.bookingbuddy.com choosing as many sources as possible--especially Mobissimo, Kayak, and Hotwire. Bookingbuddy saves you lots of time since you won't have to find each site and type in your cities and dates over and over.

Best of luck!

First from Bozeman to Europe, try searching the web and enter cheap ticket Europe USA in the bar.
This gets you to the sites selling transatlantic tickets.
You are most likely to get NY ticket or other airports not near you. If you want to fly all the way, search for all airports near you for cheap ticket to NY or wherever the long distance flights leave from, but also look into the price of a greyhound ticket for the first part of the trip.
These tickets are often for London, but remember that from London it can be rather pricey to travel to mainland Europe. So unless you want to see London, search for continental airports.

In Europe travelling the west is more expensive than travelling the east, so plan what you want to see.
Buy (secondhand) a good guidebook and read about all places where you might want to go.
Lonely Planet series is good, covering all of Europe, (in smaller and bigger areas per book) giving info on hotels, hostels and campsites, sights, museums with opening times, food and where to buy it, and transport, local and long distance. All with prices, but remember that the cheapest rooms are not available when you ask for them and that the prices will have gone up since the book was printed and that the dollar has gone down, so add up to 25% per year since the book was published to get a realistic price to budget on.

PS, buy your ticket early, but mostly three months before traveling is early enough.

Eight days to cover Ireland , England France, Spain, Italy. And you are wondering how to travel? You have no clue do you? Eight days might give you time to do London and Paris maybe.

Walk to the coast... Then swim the rest of the way...
That is the cheapest...
