So, what team do you think is the worst right now? I don't mean by record, I mean by as a team in general.

With me, I'd have to say the San Francisco Giants. San Francisco has been terrible this year! They're in last place in the NL West, 16.5 games back of Arizona! Here's some more stats to prove my point:

28th in runs scored

25th in hits

24th in home runs

29th in runs batted in

24th in on base percentage

29th in slugging percentage

27th in batting average

Their pitching isn't horrible. Noah Lowry (12-7, 3.32 ERA) and Tim Lincecum (6-3, 3.88 ERA) have been pretty good this year. Although, they do have some problems. Matt Cain (4-12, 3.77 ERA) has done well, and Barry Zito (8-10, 5.16 ERA) has been a bust as far as I'm concerned.

So, in your opinion, what's the worst team?

I meant to say that Matt Cain hasn't done well.

yankeefan: I'll agree with you on the Devil Rays, but the Pirates?! Did you see how badly they beat the Giants?!

I get those who say the Devil Rays are terrible, but I'd point out that we tend to expect the D Rays to be terrible. (sorry guys.) That's just the way it is down there right now, though with the young talent they've got, you'd think they'd win a few more games.

Same argument with the Pirates. It wasn't too long ago that great things were predicted for them with their "youth movement", but we can all see that it's gotten them nowhere.

To those who said the Cardinals: no matter how bad they've been this year, they're nowhere near the worst team in MLB.

I'll agree with everyone else. The Giants are the worst this year. Worst part is that, instead of trying to get younger, they seem to only get older. Let's face facts: the only reason why Bonds is playing at all is because of the HR record. Otherwise, he'd have been gone at the end of last year, if not earlier.

how can you say that Cain hasn't done well... i think any pitcher would gladly have a 3.77 ERA... the reason why he is 4-12 is because of the run support he receives when he's pitching... see Roger Clemens '06 file and you will see a 2.-something ERA with a 7-8 record or something pitiful like that...
i will agree however that the Giants are sucking big time this year... and they'll offload Barry to an AL team next seasson!

Usually it does depend on the record but it can also depend on how badly a team plays out on the field. Last season, the Nats owned the worst record in baseball but I thought that the M's were the worst team last year because of how bad offensive production and the bad breaks. They looked about as embarrassing as the Mets have looked this season. I think you're teacher is totally wrong because the Nats have seemed to have catch more bad breaks than the Mets. The Mets have caught bad breaks because they've had a crap load of injuries. If they were a healthy team this season, I don't think they would've looked as bad as they have this season.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays

I'm voting for Tampa Bay. Not only do they stink at 25 games back. But they are going to get hammered a few more times by division foes, the Yankees and Red Socks.

Its the Giants for me too.

The Devil Rays have the worst record in baseball because they have NO pitching.

If they had pitching they would probably be over .500

Thats how good their offense is.

Barry Zito must be a idiot for going to the Giants.

You make a good case for the Giants. With their anemic offense it's no wonder why their only good batter gets pitched around so often. No one else in the lineup can hurt them.

I'll pick SF on this side of the Mississippi and Tampa Bay east of it.

san francisco giants is a slumpy team because most of the categories are close to last place and the team is all about barry bond with this home run breaking. if they get rid of bonds, they might have a better season.

uhhmmm how bout my hometown devil rays.... worst pitching in the majors... almost a full point above the next to last worst team era.......and its all about what happens on the mound... although, we have some of the best young talen (carl crawford batting .450ish since the break) and b.j. upton and delmon young (one of top 3 arms in the outfield) and 2 of the best young pitchers (kazmir and shields) but we still suck w/ a shitty bullpen
