Should I go with James Robert as the formal name? Or just Jim-Bob? Can you put a hyphen in a legal name?

You can put a hyphen in a legal name, and it is sometimes done in surnames when one wants to preserve names of both parents. But Jim-Bob is too informal, and will cause problems later on; James Robert will be fine on the birth certificate, and if you want to call the kid Jim-Bob around the house, nobody will take exception.

I like James Robert I would go for that for a formal name and then family can shorten it to Jim Bob.. I really think James Robert is a strong name.. good pick!

That's too funny! I know a James Robert he goes by J.R.! Name your child what ever you want! Whether it's Jim-Bob Billy Bob or Bobby Sue. With all the crazy names people have now days I'm sure he will fit right in. I think hyphens are legal but numbers are not. (Someone recently tried to name their child 4real)

What does the mother think of that?
I'd say go JAmes Robert. I just want to laugh everytime I read JIM-BOB. And I can picture the kids at school taunting and bulleying over that one. Dont be that mean, give the kid a chance.

Go with James Robert. Jim-Bob is a nickname that a lot of people associate with lower-class, uneducated types.

Unfortunately, Jim-Bob is more of a name that northerners think to joke that is a southern name. Only rednecks would name their kids that, sorry.

If you want to celebrate southern heritage, why not name your boy something like Robert, Johnathan, Edward. These were parts of names of confederate generals.

Personally, I'd name my child Robert, because Lee was against slavery, but fought for the confederacy because it was home.

James Robert - call him jim bob if you like but when he grows up he will likely hate you if you cname him jim-bob officially - it could hold him back in his chosen career - think about it would you go to have brain surgery from a guy with jim-bob on that diploma on the wall??

do james robert, not jim-bob. please.

think of adolescence! He'll get made fun of and (if you live in a rough neighborhood) get the crap kicked out of him.

If you name him jim-bob formally, he can't change it if he really hates it later on. But with James Robert, he can be jim-bob and still get taken seriously at job interviews
