it's technically short for family....meaning good friend, but some who overuse it will call just about any male fam.

fam doesnt mean family it means friend; it is usually used with a closer friend that you hang with a lot not just someone you see sometimes; like when someone says what up bruh; fam is the same way but a little more personal

Short for family, just like you could say "see you later cuz"(short for cousin). In other words its an endearing word, taken as another way of say friend, homie, brother, etc.
