Since some people here are hell bent in saying that the U.S. wasn't suppose to be a melting pot, why the hell did all these people of different cultures and ethnicities come into play?
Before everyone all claims that the "white race" is superior and is what made America, maybe y'all should remember that we are people despite the color of our skin, what our background is... why say we don't belong when we are all just living to have all the same basic human rights? Is that too much to ask?

UMMM NO JAMES M. I think everyone is racist... and when I asked if everyone was racist... they are all like no of course when that is not the case. You know you are afraid of minorities just like minorities are afraid of you.

And you must be the stupid white American... sorry I should have addressed the question to the non-stupid ones.
I wonder why the founding fathers were white... they were the only ones ABLE to "found" freaking anything. What are you trying to prove?

this country was founded to escape the economic and religous oppression of england. they were being taxed unfairly without any representation in the english government so we rebelled. and the people who claim that whites are the only ones who founded this country are just extreme racists who are looking for any excuse to hate. it's true that the colonies were founded by predominantly white people but it was the slaves that actually did alot of the building. and it wasn't just english that settled here there were also spaniards , and many other nationalities and races besides white. our entire railroad system was built almost entirely by chinese immigrants, native americans were the ones who pretty much taught us how to survive over here. there are many other examples i could site but you get the point.

America, the US, Canada and Mexico are part of NORTH AMERICA therefore also Americans not to mention South America. Was created to free those enslaved by backward European Monarchy's in the spirit of the French Revolution. The idea that all Men (people) are created equal was unique and very revolutionary at the time. America was meant to be a melting pot, so long as you melted to the status quo.

The 'white race' is a myth used to divide ethnic poor (non-white) from european poor to keep both from taking what is rightfully ours. Abraham Lincoln stated (forgive me for not remembering the quote) that revolution is a good thing and must occur at least every two generations. this has not happened in the US or any other country therefore freedom devolves into the totalitarianism of our grandfathers.

In order to keep the spirit of the American revolution alive your country needed a revolution about the same time as the civil war, again during WWI and WWII then McCarthy destroyed the socialists in the 50's, the civil rights movement and black power were destroyed by vietnam and the CIA. the powers that be in America don't really care if your black or white only that you buy into their idea of society. that those who are rich are favoured by god and that the rest of us deserve to suffer in poverty because were lazy.

nothing can be further than the truth. even the founding fathers warned against the abuses of power and insisted that controls be placed on corporations. America has eaten itself from the inside out and the imperalism we are now seeing in Afganistan and Iraq are the final death roll for dying civilization. I just hope your country does not slaughter too many before your Walmart, McDonald's and Disney world come crashing down around you.

True freedom and liberty were burned to death in the US by ignorance and intolerance. The Britich king was replaced by the Greenback, pray to your bank account America it's where your god lives.

Well the whites did "find" america if you want to call it that but they certainly didnt create America..It was the English, African Americans, and Native Americans and they came into play since the foundation of this country. Most other whites didnt come into the 1920's. Ever heard of MLK? Blacks played a HUGE part is the social/cultural/racial aspects of America so you may wanna check out that part of American history.

The United States started as a colony of England. After the Americans proclaimed they were not properly being represented in Parliament and were being taxed unfairly, they soon revolted against King George, fought in a little war known as the Revolution and then became an independent nation. Umm, had little to do with race...

BUT, I agree that the superiority thing is a bunch of bullocks. In this country we are (supposed to be) regarded as equals.

The purpose is solidified in the Preamble to our Constitution:
1. To form a more perfect union.
2. To secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
I don't believe the United States is a melting pot. It's more like a salad bowl, where a variety of ingredients add their flavor to the whole.

This question was good until I read beyond the question mark, you should have stopped right there. Why do we have countries in the first place? We should abolish all countries and call everything "trees." Didn't John Lennon tell you people how destructive it would be to identify with the idea of country. The Beatles wouldn't have been able to move people in the way they did if they didn't have all the answers.

I think it was to rebel against having a king, or something.

The racist people now, were the ones who created the whole slavery issue in the first place. Isn't that ironic?!
