I may seem dumb for asking but I was wondering if you purchase a car new or used that has a navigation system/device in it does it automatically work on its own or do you have to subscribe to something like you do with onstar?

Almost all of them work with the navigation maps that are provided. You may want to upgrade the DVD maps every other year or so. You can also get traffic details with some systems and that yould cost you on a subscription basis.

Most come with a free service...you might have to purchase other things like traffic reports but thats all optional.

No, it works on it's own. They work great! Garmin makes the best ones.
