You can add or subtract like variables (a's adn a's, x's and x's. etc...).
If you are solving for x, get all x's on one side and all others on the other side of the equals sign.
If you add or subtract something from one side, you must do the same to the other side.
x - a = -x + a + 4b
+a (to both sides to eliminate the a on the left)
x = -x + 2a + 4b
+x (to both sides to eliminate the x on the right)
2x = 2a + 4b
(Divide everything by 2)
x = a + b

you have to isolate the x term.
x-a =-x+a+4b
which is a fancy pants way of saying you need to get x on one side. For simiplicity, ill use the left side.
x-a =-x+a+4b
so now im going to ADD x to both sides because of the -x on the right side.
x + x - a = a + 4b
now im going to add 2 to both sides, because of the -a on the left side.
2x = 2a + 4b
you can factor 2 out of the term on the right side
2x = 2(a+2b)
x is still not by itself. It is being multiplied by 2. so to get rid of the two, you need to divide by the 2.
2x/2 = 2(a+2b)/2
x = (a+2b)
is your answer.

what they said. its right. look up your maths textbook and stuff instead of asking on Y!A they can give you the answers but you actually need to learn it yourself.
