Do you know how this legend grew? (Outside of drag racing, I mean.)

The Hawaiian government had a brilliant idea to insert mongooses in 1888, to rid their fair islands of snakes.

The mongooses ignored the snakes and ate all their song birds instead.

Like when Australia tried to use cats to rid the outback of rats. Now they have a huge ferrule cat problem.

Yes, but it is primarily the spectacled cobra the mongoose defeats and then consumes, not so much the king cobra. Still, snake is not the staple of a mongooses diet and probably more cobras are run over on the side of the road than are actually killed by mongooses. Just a small, unlucky percentage.

Depending on if the mongoose is strong enough, and what type of cobra it is against, then yes it is possible. Both animals have certain traits that can out beat the other. But in my own opinion, the cobras poisonous fangs, and quick reflex sills would out beat the mongoose in most case scenarios.

But if you are asking if it has ever happened before, then yes I believe it has happened.

It depends on the species of mongoose like Alisha said. Mongoose live in Africa and Asia and there are many species. They feed on many species of snake including various cobras. Like someone else said large king cobras are off the menu. However most king cobras do not live long enough to reach huge sizes, so the smaller ones are on the menu.

Apparently mongooses not only can avoid a strike from a snake they seem to have a certain immunity to snake venom.

The Mongoose routinely hunts and eats snakes of all kinds including Cobras. This is not to say some Mongooses don't get bitten and die but snakes are one of their staple foods.

Most often the mongoose wins, as it has much better reflexes than cobras do.

I had a pack of baby mongooseses attack my cobra once while I was taking a leak in the woods.. They suck! I had bite marks everywhere and scratched for weeks. Filthy little buggers...

Mongi generally fight in packs so several will distract the cobra whilst others will nip at it. Enough nipping and eventually there is only the bitey bit left.
