The way a color makes you feel, of course!
It's all about what the colors symbolize, what they usually paint the memories behind them that spark your mind.
I like blue, I think it's pretty. Blue is like sea, big, endless sky, y'know? Deep and serene, with the right shade. Pink is cute and fun. For me, yellow feels edgy, anxious. Different colors make different impressions.
It depends on the uniqueness of the person :)

Color evokes mood and emotion. I think if a particular color makes a person feel good, or if that color becomes a quality of that person'd personality, it may be thought of as his/her favorite, or it may be the color that looks best on them rather than around them.
I don't think there is any "figuring out"; it's an emotional reaction.

I believe that your favorite color appeals to something you want or something you are.
Green, being my favorite color, evokes envy, jealously and greed. All of which I am.
It also is nature, which is nurturing and provides a secure feeling. It's true if you paint your walls green. I always seemed for secure.
I am all of these, to an extent of course because I have four favorite colors.

Favorite colors are because something appeals to you. It makes you feel good when you wear it or are around it. You feel you look good in it, or it feels great on it like a blanket. It soothes your emotions. You can kind of say that they are like a security blanket for a baby. You feel secure and safe in your colors or when your colors make up your world.
