It's kind of pathetic, all they're doing is typing in front of a computer. I think it's best when they put their beliefs in their name, like "proud marxist" GET REAL, America will never be socialist or fascist, we will always be in the middle.

Extremists are nothing but wimps that got picked on in school and want to feel powerful

Try reading history--the "public discourse" of ordinary citizens is a vital part of the democratic process. Sure, most is just people sounding off. But in that process, ideas are put forth, people try to support their ideas, etc.

The greatest friend the would-be tyrant has are those who sneer at this and whine that "it doesn't make a difference." That is the deadly poison that destroys freedom. Making a virtue of apathy isn't admirable--it is the ultimate betrayal of what America stands for.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that enough good men do nothing."

Some people do it to hear themselves type.
Some really want to know what other people think.

For me -- as corny as it sounds -- I do it in the hope that at least one person a week will consider a perspective that they had not previously considered. Just look at something differently, and think a little harder about the underlying issues.

If I can reach just one person a week, and prompt them to think more deeply on an issue -- even if they come to the same conclusion in the end -- that's worth my time.

Good point. No one really cares what's on here. You just type. If your angry at the person that posted the answer or question you report them and if that happens enough they get rid of your account. It doesn't matter.
