WOW is a brillaint game - my son plays it.. only drawback is you have to pay per month to play it - so it has ongoing expenses. It is one of the best RPG's around - the competitor in this field of online gaming is Guildwars, which I play, which is more expensive to purchase in the first place but free to play online.
Have a look on youtube for some video's is possibly the best way to get a feel for the game - it truely is visually awesome and one of the best games I have ever experienced - you will need a very very good video card (among other good specs) to play it but if you have the goods its worth a look.. you CAN get a 30 day free trial (as you can with Guildwars)
you are assigned 'tasks' to complete which help you level up and customise your character - read up on the website(s -= check out guildwars too) to see what its all about but yeh.. I say again, youtube will give you the best 'look' at the game!
I think what makes these games so outstanding is it would be very rare to find two characters the same - each is unique in its own way.

WoW is an MMORPG, or an Massive Multipalyer Online Role Playing Game. And basically your description is right, its a MMORPG where you do stuff. There is no over-riding goal, no end point. Eventaully all that could be left for you is competting in PvP, but that's the only real limit.
Its so popular because Warcraft itself is very popular, and WoW is very easy to play compared to most earlier MMORPGs. WoW's death penalty is practically non-existant, it has a very simple interface, and isn't too horribly complex. WoW was built for the casual gamer, even if there are many finatics, it is possible to be a good player for just hours a week. (Over a long enough time period.)

World of Warcraft, you create your alter ego by choosing from a variety of colorful races and powerful classes, and then you begin exploring, questing, and battling in Azeroth, the fantasy setting featured in Blizzard's Warcraft real-time strategy games. Fans of those games (especially Warcraft III and its expansion pack) will spot tons of references here, and they will be impressed at how faithfully World of Warcraft translates so many of Warcraft's little details and even some of the finer points of its gameplay into such a seemingly different style of game. Meanwhile, fans of other online role-playing games will be impressed at the sheer breadth and volume of content on display in World of Warcraft, whose setting seamlessly connects a bunch of wildly different-looking types of places and somehow makes them appear as if they all belong as parts of a whole....

World of Warcraft is a very impressive game. It is great fun to play, entertaining you and challenging you at the same time. It has strong characters and rich environments, with the game world of Azeroth existing as its own convincing, distinctive universe. It is visually appealing, with a charming, sublime look to it. There is a great deal to do and a lot of variety to the gameplay. It moves well and is always interesting.

It's an RPG, pretty run of the mill except you have to pay a LOT of money each month and it's really addicting, don't play it, I've lost 5 of my friends to it.

its pretty fun, I think the reason is there is more detail to things besides just battling. like your armor and weapons, and different skill buffs, etc. you have professions like enchanting and armor making and weapon making etc, so, that gets into some detail also
i think the cost is so cheap compared to how many hours you can spend playing it
