Well it really depends. If you're just going to use the laptop primarily for school I would suggest buying a Mac just because there's not a lot of known virus for OSX. Therefore virus software may not be necessary. As a result one less program running = a little bit faster. Also you have the option of installing Windows which would work perfectly well. Lastly I think (please check the website) you could get a student discount if are planning to buy a mac. However if you're going to use it for work and play (games for example), I would suggest getting Dell or HP. Mac is out of the picture when it comes to games. Games are meant to be played on PC platforms. Also for Dell/Hp you could configure the laptop and there are more options to choose from to suite your needs. Lifetime and quality wise, both Mac and Dell/HP are reasonably ok as long as you buy the AppleCare warranty from Mac or CompleteCare warranty from Dell.

You really want to decide what you need to do with your laptop and therefore what components it should have. Also think in terms of ergonomics and whether you'd be comfortable using it, the keyboard on MacBooks seems rather bad to me although some people like it, you have to decide for yourself if it's any good.
If you like MacOS then getting a Mac is a good idea but if you don't like it or are just going to run Windows or Linux on your computer then you'd be wasting your money getting a Mac.
Getting a model that comes with a 3 year warranty as standard would indicate that it's probably pretty well built (although you should be getting a 3 year warranty on a laptop anyway, pay extra if it only comes with 1 year because if a laptop breaks it really costs a lot to fix).
As for Macs, it's been a long time since I really used one, back in the pre OS X days and a lot has changed since then but I did manage to develop a hatred of Mac OS.
OS X seems to be a big improvement though although if you have never used it before it'll probably take a bit of getting used to (and only having one mouse button might get annoying if you're used to right clicking).
Whether you'll like it is another matter and not really something anyone can predict in advance.
If you like the rest of the features of the MacBook then you can put Windows on it (it is basically just a PC with a funny BIOS (or more accurately no BIOS) anyway) if you don't like Mac OS (although Linux would also be a good choice and probably better if it weren't for the fact that you need some Microsoft junk like Office).

I think it's best to get a dell/hp because a macbook will have problems with downloading software programs that are available right now. I think that dell/hp has a better quality and lifetime. But the laptop that you choose is your choice. I would recommend you to try all of the options and figure out which one you would like to have.

I'd say get the PC.
Mac users are quick to point out that the new Macs can run Windows, but why would you waste $2000+ to do that when you can buy an excellent PC for < $600 that does the *exact* same thing? Not to mention, you'll be able to upgrade your PC without paying out your nose to Apple (if its even upgradable at all)
Mac is cute, but cute doesn't cut it in the real world. (c)

it really depends on if you prefer apple or windows. I must say however that vista has all the advantages of apple that I can see, (gadgets, ect.) you may be able to tell that I'm not a big apple fan myself. I recently got an HP, the help center and other HP specific programs are very helpful. sorry about my bias
