At a website and message board, myself and 1 other person has access to the server to upload files (board files, website pages, etc). I use Filezilla and now a couple of others would like access to the server. The newer people are novices where FTP is concerned and I'm not sure if I want them actually accessing the area where the files are kept until they are more confident (i.e. they know what they are doing and what the pitfalls are). Does anybody here know what the maximum number of people you should let access the FTP of a website before it becomes too dangerous in terms of possibly losing files or files getting moved around.

I personally would not let anyone into that area unless you knew that they were absolutely capable and reliable and even then, why would you? It is very easy to make a mistake and bring the whole site down.
Just make sure you have a daily back-up just in case.

I am familiar with FTP servers. I am not sure how many people should access the server. I would be very cautious who I would allow access to my files. I think you should have no more than three people. I think you should have a back up of all your recent work on removable devices such as a flash drive, CD, DVD or a zip disk.

It only takes one to really mess things up. I doubt I'd ever grant novices FTP access.

Better safe than sorry. The extra step (them sending to me and ME uploading) would be worth it to me.

One idiot is an unsafe number of people to give FTP access.

It is wiser for you to have your hosting company create additional FTP accounts (or create them yourself through your control panel), and give those people a different directory that if they mess it up, it doesn't hurt your Web site.

If it were me, I would make a certain area that anyone could upload/download from -- but restrict access to important data to those with the experience.
