I have used a product called Premiur Rose Conditioner on my show horse this year, and I really like it. I also like Show Sheen, but because Show Sheen has silicon it makes the horses so slick the saddle won't stay straight. So now I use Show Sheen on the tail and back legs so her fake tail doesn't cling to her, and otherwise I use Premiur Rose Conditoner on the rest of my horse. You buy it for about $25 bottle, and then mix it to ten parts of water so it goes a long ways. It helps your horse look a bit shinier, it repells dust, it keeps their coat nice and healthy looking. I apply it every day, even when I'm at home as part of my grooming routine and I'm still only 1/2 through my first bottle!
I'm also a huge fan of a slinky. My horse's mane is fairly thick and when I band it it tends to want to stand on end. If I use Quik Braid when I band, and then keep the slinky on all the time except when I'm riding, her mane stays flat and looks quite decent. So buy a slinky, they'll make your horse's mane look way better. Then again, I don't know if you band your mule's mane, or not! Do you? If not, then I guess a slinky isn't too essential.
As for fake tails, I have one which I quite like. I bought mine on eBay after doing a bunch of homework and it is quite decent and I only paid about 1/3 the price of a new one. I bought a switch, not an actual extension, because switchs are so totally easy to put in. My switch has two little horse hair loops on the top of the tail. All I do is part my horse's tail at her tail bone, first figuring out how high I want to put it so the fake tail will end up the same length as the real tail. I make sure I take hair from deep inside her tail, and I make a tiny little braid smaller than my pinky finger. I braid only a couple of times, put one loop into the braid and braid another time or two, then braid in the second loop. I braid another few times, use two elastics to hold it into place. Then I let the parted tail hair fall back into place so it cover the top of the switch, I brush everything together and spray with more show sheen. And I'm done. It takes me about 10 minutes, and I can do it without anyone's assistance.
Guess that's about all. I do use a whitening shampoo for my horse's high white socks, that purple stuff works excellent and makes a huge difference in the whiteness! Otherwise I've never used the white or black spray, but I do know it works.
Good luck. I'd love to know what you do different with your mules than I do with my Paints!

When you use hoof black or whatever type of hoof polish you prefer, use hair tape (really cheap at drug stores) on the hairline so the polish doesn't turn the legs colors.
for amazing tails, never use a brush. wash bi weekly and put good conditioner (my favorites are vetrolin and cowboy magic). Then work all the tangles out by hand. Brush only the day before the show. It seems like alot but believe me, it works wonders.
Use disposable razors on the muzzle and ears to get all those pesky little hairs.
Shave the white on the horses legs the week before the show, that way it will be whiter, sleeker and by doing it in advance, any nasty clipper marks will disappear. To whiten the legs right before entering the arena, rub a small amount of baby powder into the white. However, make sure you rub all the excess off. It can be bad if you dont.
Try a color enhancing shampoo. I love the ones by rio vista, but make sure you try it sometime before the show.
For face I like to use baby oil or commercial face gloss to highlight the eyes and muzzle.
Cowboy magic makes a product called green spot remover which is great for those last minute rolls in manure and grass.
Show sheen and a good wiping are best for right before going in the arena, but be careful about applying show sheen (or any other sheen) to the back. It can make the saddle slide quite a bit.
good luck

I use a spray called miracle groom, you spray it before you brush to hide all the dirt that might come up when you brush and you can also use it on manes and tails and it creates a really nice sheen to the coat, mane and tail. I even use it when I am just riding!

Peppy is great however don't use it on your own hair. Tried it and looked like I'd dipped my head in a fat fryer within 30 mins.
I like black spray for legs. I always clip out the coronet bands on white legs so that the hoof black doesn't bleed up the hair onto the socks. Also clip any white on the faces because it makes them look sharper. I'm a big fan of tie in tails too. Gotta love that volume!

This isn't really a grooming tip for a horse but more for a person riding the horse. Duck tape your pants if they don't fit. lol. Yes I know it sounds really weird but if you riding saddle seat it really works and put hairspray on your but. It helps it stick to the saddle. Yes, I am serious in a funny way! We use to do it all the time when I rode saddle seat. And if you get a stain on one of your outfits spray hairspray then get a wet towel on dap the stain with it. (This only works if it is a new stain)
Good Luck! :)

A good black spray is Shapleys. Here's the link- http://www.shapleys.com/products_view.aspx?articleid=41
They also have many other colors.
As for tails, I use Custom Tails. They have many different shades to choose from, and are competitively priced!!!

Keep the muzzle "shaved" as part of your regular grooming routine...keeps it stubble and bump free. A little baby oil on the muzzle area looks good too.
