icon??? If she had lived, do you think that today she would still be as sought after, as photographed, or would she have settled down and blended more quietly into the shadows, still doing good works for worthy causes?

She would still be sought after - admittedly she would not have the same youthful beauty, but would still be a beautiful glamorous and fashionable woman. I think she embodied the dream of many little girls to marry a prince in a lavish wedding with the fantasy gown, live in a castle and have little princes. And when that didn't work out she created her own magic through her friendships with musicians and fashion designers, redesigning herself with a fresh, less prim look and came out all the more glamorous for her trouble.

Ready for a pop psychology answer? Diana was someone who craved attention quite possibly because her mother and father divorced at a critical age for her. Since she didn't get the emotional support that she needed from Charles, who also needed an enabler to support his emotionally-needy personality, she turned to an adoring public. She also wanted to show him just how much he was missing out on by rejecting her in favor of Camilla.

If Diana would have lived, she quite possibly could have settled down into a comparatively quiet life if she had found an emotionally-supportive husband. Whether she could find such an individual, or whether she would continue to look for Mr Goodbar remains to be seen, however. Diana was quite possibly a high-priced British version of Marilyn Monroe, or as Elton John rephrased it, a candle in the wind.

Since she actively sought publicity I don't think she would have wanted to blended into the shadows. She'd rather be on the front page getting one of her journalist "friends" to write a smear piece about the last person who made her angry.

She adored the limelight, even perfected her so called 'shy look' for the crowds. Just think of all the other British royals and you can easily imagine why Diana stood out and became an icon.
