I was just in Temecula a couple of weeks ago on vacation, but not at night. Yours and their best bet is to get away from city lights, or shield your direct view of streetlights and look up from as dark a site as you can find.

You and they can start observing the Perseid meteor shower after about 11:00 PM local time on Saturday night with the peak on Sunday night. Just get a dark viewing site, a comfortable reclining chair, some warm clothes, bug repellent and look up. There will be ~30 meteors/hour Saturday night and about 60-80/hour on Sunday night. As a general rule, the best time for meteor viewing is after midnight into the early morning.

Have fun!

Anyplace away from local light and without anything like buildings or trees blocking your view of the sky. You want to see as much of the sky as possible because the meteors will appear in all parts of the sky, and they appear only for a second at a time, at random intervals. During the peak just before morning light Monday morning you may see up to 80 per hour, which is a little more than one a minute.

I sure do miss living in Temecula, but I dont miss the traffic :|. Go to Palomar Observatory, that's about the only place around there where you'll get a half-way decent view without too bad light saturation.
