No, I do not think everyone with confederate flags are racist.

The confederate flag does seem to signify racism for some people because it was the southern flag at the time when slavery was legal.

Your mom is not alone in her thinking, but I know that everyone with a confederate flag is not racist...some people simply see it as a sign of southern pride or value its historic significance.

My son went to Gettysburg, PA with my in-laws and they bought him a shirt with the confederate flag on it. I did not think a thing of it because, historically, the flag was a southern symbol during the Civil War. So...it was bought for him to commemorate what he learned about the Civil War.

Well, he wore it to school. His Assistant Principal insisted he turn it inside out and wear it. The AP is an African American man.

This was my first introduction to the racial overtones of the confederate flag. Now...I'm nervous about him wearing the shirt anywhere for fear that someone will think he is racist when he is not.

I live in SC and see alot of the confederate flags. And in many cases they are not racist. Some actually have no clue to the history of the flags and why it hurts others so much.

But some are racist without a doubt. But the ones I worry about are the racist who dont show it by a flag or some other sign.

Not all.

I never thought of it as racist until somebody pointed it out, meaning that the South was pro-slavery, and the flag they used at that time happend to be the one you are describing.

Whenever I saw that flag, it reminded me of the Civil War, not slavery or racism. It is our history and that can't be changed.

I see antique canons, and I even own a small replica of one, but that does not mean I am a pro-murder. Just a Civil War Buff.

By the way, My Great-Great-Great-Great grandfather was "John Brown of Harper's Ferry", who secretly led the slaves from the south, into the north across the Mason Dixon line. My mother's last name is Brown. I am 1/16 American Indian. My Great-Great-Great grandfather was an Indian Chief called Otto Bluff, and used his wife's last name (he didn't have one), which is Brown.

Incase you are wondering how I am 1/16 Indian, both of my parents are 1/16, which makes me 1/16.

The confederate flag has nothing to do with racism, your mom is racist if anything.

The confederate flag represents the spirit of the south colonies and their different beliefs in living. It didn't represent slavery (some states sided with the Union allowed slavery), and that wasn't even "racist".

My husband is from Tennessee and he has a rebel flag tattooed on his arm. He isn't racist. Basically, in the South, they see the rebel flag as southern pride. Not white pride, southern pride. My husband got his tattoo when he was 18 and he admitted that he didn't even realize that people in the north saw it as a sigh of racism. He just was proud of being southern so he got the tattoo. He married me and loves me.......and I'm 25% black. I'm sure SOME people display the rebel flag as a sign of racism but most don't.

there are a number of ignorant people who will respond with lack of information, or emotion, to the question. it is real of any question related to the accomplice conflict flag (not the "Stars and Bars", which grew to become right into a fullyyt diverse flag). the fact, however, is that the flag is under no circumstances "racist". that's basic to place a label like that on something at present. that's in straight forward terms a term that particularly has no meaning, yet is used to silence people who disagree with you. study what Charles Dickens, Lord Acton, and others had to assert on the subject of the conflict. It wasn't approximately slavery. It grew to become into on the subject of the main suitable of self determination--a similar ingredient that the Colonials fought the progressive conflict over.

Yes and no. Depending on the context in which the Confederate flag is the focal point. If it is a Southern Heritage shirt then no but if is flying blatently like the one in Central Alabama (think 100 feet over a major expressway) then I would assume the Klan is not far away. I would take your experience with a grain of salt. You learn. I went to a pretty conservative southern school so I've seen it all (even the rich little brats who wanted to be in the Klan).

It's more of a southern pride thing. There's a racist taboo associated with the flag for good reason, but you can't assume that everybody who supports that flag is a racist.

I think the Confederate flag means different things for whites and blacks. To most blacks it represents such a horrible period in time for black people. For most white people I think it just represents the south in general. And does not necessarily mean they are racist.... Most do not realize it is insulting to the point of view of a black person.
