The battery recently just died, so I tried plugging it in to recharge it, but it won't charge whatsoever. What should I do?

I've had this laptop for a while, and the light on the laptop has always lit up when plugged in, but two days ago when it died, it didn't light up

there are multiple possible electrical problems

i'd test the following in this order:

1. wall socket

2. ground fault interruptor or universal power supply

3. the power cord and transformer {died on my wife's Toshiba, btw.} -- I used a voltmeter to test the power output.

Btw, are you using the correct one? {dang things look a lot alike these days and some folk have a laptop, a blackberry, a cell phone, an ipod, and even a cd or dvd player all using cords hanging from transformers. They oughta label 'em.}

4. does the power cord still fit the socket properly? {my daughter's puppy chewed one up so badly it wouldn't stay in the socket ... oops}

5. if your laptop is more than two years old, it is quite possible the battery has simply died. they rarely last more than three to four years, in my experience. new ones are available on the web -- google your brand, model, and the word 'battery'

6. [technician task] i've also had the power switch inside the case get jammed -- piece of plastic broke off and got stuck in there -- had to disassemble the case to find this.

7. and the internal power works could have died -- repair shops can order the parts to replace these.

Look at the power cord. If the LED light is off, the cord is defective. Contact your laptop system provider (HP, DELL) for a free replacement. If the LED light is on, the cord is either defective, or your laptop battery is defected, or your computer battery reciever (where you plug it into your computer, located in the back) is defected.

In either of the options, contact your provider.

measure the output voltage of your charger and see if it is what it says on the label.
Buy a new battery if it is correct.
