Need to access carb, etc for inspection, but can't get the fuel tank off. What is holding it on?

The fuel tank is normally held in place with two rubber gromments that slide into slots in the engine cowling. Shoot a bit of wd 40 on them and pull evenly on the tank. It should slide up and out of the slots.

find out who made the motor. then find the model type and code (if its Briggs and Stratton) or the model and serial if its another make like Tecumseh. If you are talking about a riding mower it can also be a Kohler but I doubt that because typically they are big enough to warrant an under the seat fuel tank. Anyway, give me the numbers and make of the motor and i'll tell you what you need to do step by step.

Have you disconnected the fuel line? The clip holding the line on the bottom might be hindering it. Sometimes giant zip ties hold the tanks in as well.
