This concept is a by-product of far right conservative attitudes. These conservatives only acknowledge people as being religious who wear it on their sleeves. When it comes to people who are very private with their faith, but still very religious, they act as though they have no religious faith at all. Case in point? Hillary Clinton. Lifelong Methodist, attends church regularly, prays often, staunch believer in God. But she doesn't run on her religion, or talk about it much, so they make jokes when it's suggested she has faith.
As religions go, both Methodists and Catholics, for example, are traditionally more closed mouthed and private about their religious beliefs. They have the same basic moral compass as pertains to religion as those people who need to shout it out - like evangelicals. But, they tend to live their faith quietly, in a dignified manner, rather than blowing a trumpet and believing they hold a moral superiority that gives them the right to order our laws per their dictum.
It's become hard for a lot of Christians in this country since the evangelicals became so politically involved. Not all Christians think the way they do - but that doesn't make them any less Christian.

Great question here. I think it's because the Religious Right and the Republican Party have hijacked Christianity. The truth is that most Democrats ARE Christians as well. You're absolutely right in stating that it's a separation of church and state issue. The Republicans don't seem to care about that and are starting to sound like theocrats.

God doesn't have a political party. Democrats tend to leave church and state seperate. They do not infiltrate their personal faith into politics. While the majority of the Republican conservative party tend to feel that liberals do not have morals and make laws and policies that actually violate the seperation of church and state. One can be a democrat and have liberal beliefs that let people decide what to do with their bodies, who they sleep with, etc. They may not agree personally with these choices but they believe it is a person's right to make their own choices without government involvement. I am also a liberal and proud to be called one.

Good for you... and I know PLENTY of Christians who are on your side at this point...
We're really starting to separate the far right racists and homophobes from the true Christians at this point...
People have had enough of being manipulated and used by inflaming pundits like Anne Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.
In fact, all the Democrats who are running are Christian... (and not all of them are "liberal" either...) just look at the list of how they all feel on the issues:

Jesus was the first to separate Church & State. He said "Give unto God what belongs to God's & to Caesar what belongs to Caesar".

Many Republicans appear to base their Christianity on morals more than love. In their opinion, if a person is a democrat, they also are pro-choice, for gay marriage, and have literally destroyed the U.S. What good are morals without love?
Democrats base their Christianity on love and the needs of humanity and are nonjudgmental. They are aware of the fact that individual morals can't be legislated. That seems to be impossible for some Republicans to fathom.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that read "I am a Christian and a Democrat."
I thought it was great.

I don't know, except that anyone who thought that would have to be very narrow minded. You are right, God doesn't give a hoot about politics.

I'm a Democrat and Christian as well. I don't now what people actually think, and it really doesn't matter. As long as we are responsible in our voting and know what God would want us to do, is all that matters.
