I currently type 30 wpm. The reason is because I never really learned to type without looking at the keyboard so I have to keep looking back and forth at what I'm typing and the keyboard. If I type on my own or if I already know what phrase I am going to be typing, without having to look back and forth from keyboard to paper or screen, then I type 49 wpm. How can I learn to type without looking at the keyboard as I type? It slows me way down.

It's a very simple answer- practice. I was taught the in the old school days where there was a real typewriter (yea ancient times) and hated it. Looked at the keys all the time. So, I wasn't very good either, but I did memorize the home keys. (asdf-jkl;). I took a class and that helped. It started with the basics that taught the proper repetitions of finger movement and finger placement.

To be honest the best way to type with out looking at the keyboard is just keep practicting certain phases that u would get out of a typing book. I did in school and have no problem typing 1st make sure ur fingers are on the home keys left hand ASDF right hand JKL; right hand thumb rest above the space bar. that way u can reach any key. so Ur finger on a should reach q and z . so on etc. and always bring Ur fingers back to the home keys. just keep practising asdfjkl; over and over again. there is little rhymes u can practise to. just print off a page from the Internet cause software wont make a difference all u can do is practice. hope u can follow this gobbledygook ha. good luck

I never officially learned either, but over the process of 5 years, I've taught myself. Your fingers develop muscle memory for where the keys are, and soon you can type as fast as you need to. I don't even need to look down anymore when I type, and I can do 70wpm.
Just keep typing and over time you will get faster and faster.
