What fish can i keep in a ten gallon tank and how many can i keep i don't want any more brakish water fish. i had four guppies and they all died. i am looking at tetras or goldfish or gouramis or something like that. would a plecostomus be okay with fish like that also? i want as many fish as i can but i don't want to overcrowd the tank. and, is it true that the fish that you keep only grow as big as their tank lets them? does it affect them at all, like make them die faster?

First of all, no goldfish or plecos, they will both quickly outgrow your tank. Which leads to the answer for another of your questions, in a way tank size will limit the growth of a fish, but it will lead to a slow and painful death for them at a far shorter than normal lifespan.

As far as which fish to keep, I would suggest you start off with a few (2-3) cory catfish for the bottom and add 2-3 schools of 6 each of any one of several smaller tetras. I would chose from tetras similar in size to neons, black neons, penguin tetras, emperor tetras, small fish that remain small all of their lives. You could instead chose either gold barbs or checkerboard barbs for one of those 2-3 schools of fish with no problems at all.

Feel free to email me if I can help further.

Check out the link below to find the fish appropriate for a 10-gallon tank. You can keep as many as 12 fish in a 10-gallon. I would not recommend plecostomus since they can grow very large which is why they later require a 40-gallon tank! I would go with a freshwater snail instead.

I my self would go with a couple dwarf gouramis and some a couple African dwarf frogs. I really enjoy my frogs There very active and fun to watch. They live underwater all the time. They do swim to the top to get air now and than. You will really enjoy them. And they get a long with a lot of different fish. Also i have a dwarf gouramis. He is really pretty and i love to watch him move around in the tank. Hope this helps Good Luck

No, it isn't true that fish only grow as big as the tank. Their bodies may stop on the outside, but their internal organs continue to grow and become deformed. If you want a lot of fish, goldfish are not the way to go. You can only have one goldfish in 10 gallons. Go for the tetras. In a 10 gallon, you could have 7 tetras. That would make for a nice school without overcrowding.

Ditto to MM and VG

here is just another idea for different fish

5 FEMALE Bettas
2-3 cory cats like a pepper cory ( bottom feeder)
and lots of live plants
You will need at least 3 females though, that they are able to choose the so called peckingorder, with only 2 one will dominate the other

Hope that helps

If you get a tank to small for them you will stunt them, witch makes them die faster. Get a filter and a snail , those are all too clean the tank. Get Shrimp, they are pretty cool, like ghost shrimp or you could get a glass shrimp(animal not real glass), or a ghost fish those are cool fish. Oh ya, get an air stone.
