Do the results today mean that for the next national poll, Mitt Romney will lead over Guliani? My opinion is that the straw poll will have virtually no lasting effect.

To George Z: My understanding is that Ronald Reagan (in 1980) and Bill Clinton (in 1992) lost the Iowa Straw Poll to George Bush and Tim Harkin. So I don't think if Romney loses the Republican nomination it would be "history in the making." Frankly, I'd be shocked if Romney does win.

The winner of the straw poll has historically finished near the top (but did not necessarily win) the actual Iowa caucus the following year. Likewise, winning either event in Iowa does not guarantee the nomination. The effect of the straw poll will be to give Romney a small bump from the media attention and to eliminate Tommy Thompson and Duncan Hunter. It may also be the beginning of the end for John McCain and may give Fred Thompson a reason to think twice about entering.

Mitt Romney cheated at Ames. Huckabee did nicely because of the fact of FairTax (even however he's a tax-and-spend liberal). Brownback finished at the back of his clone. Tancredo actually did extremely nicely, however his clone Hunter had the main embarrassing overall performance. Tommy Thompson dropped out because of the fact he did not end interior the right 2. Fred Thompson had no grassroots help, showing that his "marketing campaign" is a classic astroturf circulate. Rudy Giuliani and John McCain gained little-to-no help. Cox had no risk first of all. the only winner at Ames grew to become into Ron Paul. His 5th place end (even however maximum of his supporters on the poll have been from out of state) with over 1300 votes formally (however Romney in all probability stole 1500 votes or so from Dr. Paul) finally disproved the media's absurd conspiracy theories that he in straight forward terms has the help of roughly 5 information superhighway spammers and confirmed that he has genuine help. it is likewise a good ingredient for his marketing campaign that he did not win because of the fact it potential he won't flame out like Howard Dean did 4 years in the past or Pat Buchanan did in the two 92 and ninety six. Ron Paul has a good risk to be the Republican nominee if he can proceed to entice supporters at his present day fee, particularly because of the fact something of the GOP container is ridiculously vulnerable.

The loser of the straw poll has never in history gone on to win an election.....Bush won in 2004...So if someone besides Romney wins the election, it will be history in the making.
