The savings from using the lower octane fuel off-sets the slightly better performance you get from the more expensive 89 & 92 octane fuels.
You can experiment and decide which one is worth it's weight in gold because that is what you'll be burning up every time you fill up at the pump.
There is minimal increase in miles per gallon but all cars have to be engineered to run on the lower octane fuels. They have sensors that detect octane and engine knock and the engine management system adjusts the timing accordingly.
You will not damage the engine by using the 87 octane. I have noticed that on some cars the 92 octane makes them run a bit hotter than the 89 or 87 octane fuels.
Good Luck!

For most cars, 87 is fine and 89 won't help with performance. For some sports cars, 89 is recommended.

Your car manual will tell you what grade to use but the vast majority of cars use 87 and using 89 is a waste of money.

89 burns cooler and slower and is more likely to leave deposits. Don't use it if you car recommends 87. It does the same thing in V8's. Those guys are wasting their money if the motor isn't pinging and they have knock sensors for that.

Put in the octane rating fuel that the manufacturer recommends. If you're engine calls for 87 then use 87. That's all it needs.

i would use the 89 for a regular car, for older cars and trucks with v8 engines i would use 93, i have a 94 ford van with a 5.8 l engine and it will not run great on less than 93
