I have a ten gallon tank with 2 angelfish, 3 tetras, 1 molly, and 1 pleco (Don't question the fish that i have in my tank at the moment please, as i am keeping a couple in my tank for a friend). Yesterday I looked at my tank and everything was normal. I fed my fish this morning, went to work, and now i just got home and i discovered brown algae on everything in the tank, and not just the walls. Even all of my ornaments are brown. What happened? Help!

What if I got a chinese algae eater once the guests are gone?

To have come up and spread so quickly, it's more likely cynobacteria than algae. Assuming the fish are going back to their owner soon, the treatment is still the same, water changes and reduced lighting.

You're probably getting the bloom because of the additional fish in your tank. If they're only temporary, you'll need to just do extra water changes until they can go back home, but more for the additional ammonia than the algae. Green and brown algae isn't really bad for your tank, it just doesn't look very pretty. Just wipe it down. It will go away, if all other parameters are okay, once the visitors go home.

You are having an algae bloom b/c of the extra fish in the tank. CHECK YOUR AMMONIA levels ASAP!!!! this can cause them to spike and will kill all the fish in the tank.
start doing water changes to prevent this if it hasn't happened, this will also help keep the phosphate levels down. Brown algae is easy to clean. Just take out the decorations and clean them and wipe down the sides of the tank.
also, you can go the pet store and get 'Algae Destroyer'. This will kill the algae and keep more from growing.

how much longer are you planning on watching these extra fish?? if you are planning on having them for a while, get a second tank for them or you are going to keep having problems.

My guess is that your tank isn't setup for the new fish you have in the tank for your friend. The increase in poo and food may have caused a bloom. The easiest way to get rid of it is to siphen it out. Brown algae usually comes off easily. If problems continue you can buy algicide but i don't recomend any chemical treatment if it can be avoided.

If your lights have been on very little turn them on. More frequent water changes should clear it up in no time.

Maybe you should move the visitors into another tank (a large bowl would work) and get a sucker fish (sorry, I'm not sure what the scientific name is).

you most likely need to get a sucker fish, they eat algae and keep the tank really clean
