The United States Constitution
If a candidate isn't talking about the Constitution then that candidate has no respect for the rule of law or your freedom.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

We Libertarians believe in social tolerance and fiscal responsibility. The Party believes government shouldn't interfere with abortion nor should it regulate people's sex lives. We prefer a non-interventionist foreign policy meaning you leave us alone and we'll leave you alone. Doesn't mean we're chickens, we just dislike interfering in things that doesn't concern us. Overall, we believe as Thomas Jefferson said "government at is best is tolerable, at is worst is evil". We believe you can take care of your life and only you manage your finances. Government should be small, useless spending should be abolished.

coragryph put it rather well.

I just want a government that will do only what it is supposed to, not one that tells me how to live my life. I already have parents and even they accept that I am no longer a child.

Freedom of personal choice, civil liberties, small govt, minimal taxes, minimal restrictions on belief and behavior, harsh punishment for those found guilty of crimes.

In short -- do what's necessary, do it well -- but don't do more than is necessary to get the job done well.
