The best thing you can do is to dress the baby as you would dress yourself to be comfortably warm or cool. If you are a little bit cool then you may want to put a onsie under your child's clothes. In the winter months I always kept my children in a onsie under all clothing even when they slept since they often kick covers off.
If you hot and wearing sandals then let your child go barefoot too if the toes are warm. When you take your child out though put them in some booties or socks because you will enter places that are cooler than others.
Use your mother instincts because they will drive you in the right direction on how to take care of your little one! We are all nervous in the beginning but we get the hang of it pretty quick! It's amazing how we as moms can learn the different cries of our babies... I'm wet, I'm hungry, I'm bored or I'm tired!

What's the weather like where you are. It's hot here. You tell pretty much the same way you know you are hot or cold. I'd swaddle in a light receiving blanket, undershirt and diaper and I don't think a hat is needed unless the AC is cold and drafty. I never had baby babies in the summer, but I've seem some parents keeping the baby in a stroller or carrier in just a diaper and shirt. Use your judgment based on the environment you are in. You can feel their skin and cheeks.

Your baby's temperature is the same as yours, so a good thing to go by is to dress him/her in the same type of weather gear as your own clothing.
If you feel you need a long-sleeve top, then put one on the baby also, for example.
Also, swaddling is OUT. Health care providers have learned that swaddling up an infant restricts movements that are necessary for the development of motor skills. If you feel your baby needs to be made warmer, put on an article of clothing with long sleeves and pant legs, or a snow suit (in the winter). To bind them up tightly for any long period of time has been found to be detrimental.
Keep your home at a comfortable temperature, dress your new baby in a similar type of garment that you will be needing for yourself, and you'll be just fine.
All new mothers and fathers have these kinds of questions, it is normal. It would be so wonderful if babies came with instructions! We raised 3 healthy, happy kids, and we have learned it all. The best thing to remember is that your baby is your own, and unlike any other baby, so do what is best for you and don't worry so much about what 'other' parents are doing at a certain stage - everyone is different. A good dose of common sense is the best medicine.

You kiss the top of their head ;-) If they are hot they will feel hot to the touch, if they are cold they will feel cool. Technically it is easier to tell by kissing the back of their neck but that can be hard to get to. Sweating is also a sign of being too hot. Generally too hot is the one you have to worry about -babies cry when too cold but not always when they are too hot.
BTW some babies hate being swaddled.

Well, my 6 week old son let's me know when he's too hot by trying kick all his covers off. If I notice he's frantically kicking when they're on and getting fidgety, I take the covers off first and see what he does. Almost 90% of the time (unless he's hungry) he is completely calm the moment I take them off of him. As for cold, I'm not sure yet because it's summer here and he was born in the summer. I'll find out about the cold in the winter.

Everybody is right. Just don't worry about it. If there is one thing babies are good at, it is letting you know when they aren't happy. My favorite way of warming my new born was this:
The Nurses said they were going to have to put my little girl in an incubator, or I could put her on my bare chest. So I tore my shirt off, put her up against me, and put her blanket over her. She was one happy camper, and a new daddy of an hour cried lied a baby.
They don't have quite the muscle mass that you do (muscle makes heat), so if you are comfortable, they are probably just a bit cold. You'll do fine. Don't worry.

An armpit examining is the LEAST precise, and you will be able to desire to hold that thermometer in place for 10 minutes. The rectal is the main precise, preserving that for the period of place for 3-5 min. this is actual the final for a sprint one. Insert the bulb a million/2 -a million in.. An axillary temp (armpit) is the main puzzling to acquire, and the conventional precise temp for the armpit is ninety 9.6, a million degree bigger than orally, and rectally, that's going to envision one hundred and one.6. keep in mind that's good to have that thermometer below the arm in place for @ least 10 min. subsequently that's accuracy is the toughest to acquire. i'm specific she's wonderful, and you're worrying for the reason which you're a youthful, worrying mom. If she is incredibly warm on your touch, then you certainly would understand, being too chilly isn't plenty as a situation. in case you're chilly, then she would be able to be too. Fever is an illustration of an infection, and many times a sprint one will cry plenty too. As observant as you look, you would understand whilst she is ill, she would be able to cry plenty.

when my son was first born i was a nut about this!!!! he was born in february so it was cold. I couldn't decide if he should sleep in one of those gowns because they have the mitts for the hands to keep them warm, but then he kicked socks off and hated swaddling, but with footsie pj's i thought his hands would be cold. with the swaddle me thing i thought it came to close to his mouth and same with the sleep sack.....like i said i was a nut, i found something wrong with everything. After awhile you just know and you realize that if they are uncomfortable they will let you know! my son is now 5 1/2 months and sleeps in just a long sleeve one piece, we have central air so its on the cooler side but i know he is a warm baby in general so know he is ok!
don't worry you'll get to know your baby and what he/she likes and dislikes.
sorry about the rambling, i just wanted to show you how my mind worked when i was thinking about all taht!

Yes, my baby was cold and I knew cause he would have goosebumps or just whimper, but not be awake. When he is hot he sweats and feels sticky. If you are in the house, just have a light onsie and light blanket for summer and winter have more. Babies need like one more layer than us, but sice it is so hot out, that rule don't apply (at least to my baby). In the winter, make sure they definetly have more layers than you.

They do, just keep tabs on them. They fuss either way. But they do lose heat rapidly through head and feet in cold drafty air. Keep socks on in the cold & keep lightly covered in hot sun. And enjoy. In two weeks they head off for college.
