The correct proceedure is as follows:
1) Red wire to jumping car battery.
2) Red wire to jumped car battery.
3) Black wire to jumped car engine block.
4) Black wire to jumping car engine block.
This is because no current will flow so no spark until the last wire is connected. The the jumping car will be charged so little to no hydrogen gas will be around the battery. Least chance of making a boom. Because when you make the last connection it will spark unless you are very good.

Turn the car off and put the red on the positive side and black on the negative side for both cars and then turn on the car that will start and let it run for about 5-10 minutes then try starting the other car. If its the battery, then the car should start. If its the alternator or starter, it won't start. I would also take your car to a auto parts store or any other place that sales and/or installs batteries, and have them check the battery for how much juice is left or when it is time to replace it. Usually that is done for free or for just a few dollars. If I'm right, then I'm a girl! If I'm wrong, then I'm a boy!! No, I am really a woman and I think that I'm right about the process, but I would check out the manual for the car to be 100% right. My car manual has a diagram on how to hook them up and the right process for the jump.

A good quality set of cables is best to use but use what you have on hand. Get the cars as close as possible with out them touching. First connect the positive terminals of the charged and dead batteries with the red booster cable, then connect the black cable to the negative post of the charged battery and to the frame of the vehicle with the dead battery, at a point away from the battery. Never connect the black cable on the dead battery as this may cause a spark and if there is any hydrogen gas present this may cause an explosion

The Jumper Side, cables to the terminals, Jumpee Side, Negative to frame(something metal, no finishes) Positive to terminal. Accelerate Jumper car and the Jumpee turns the key in their car. Removal, Pos. then neg. for both cars.

This might sound like the most un-easy way to do it - but it is the most safe way to do it.
On the car with power - connect your red cable to the positive pole on the battery (most likely red).
On the car without power - connect the other end of your red cable to the the positive pole on the battery (most likely red).
On the car with power - connect your black cable to the negative pole on the battery (most likely black).
On the car without power - connect the other end of your black cable to the a good blank ground/frame/body/bolt a little away from the battery.
Disconnection you do the whole thing backwards.
By following this sequence you minimize the risk of making a short circuit and you minimize the risk of an exploding battery due to hydrogen gasses ignited by sparks when connecting a electrical load.

red got to positive and black goes to negative. Make sure the cables are out of the way of any moving parts (like the fan). Give it a couple of minutes and try the car needing to be jumped.

Black on black is negative. Red on red is positive. Put POSITIVE on good battery, first, then put pos on bad battery. Neg on bad then on bad. Wait a few moments and try. Do not try over 20 seconds. If it doesnt start, wait for about a minute or two.. As soon as it starts, take the positive off both sides, then neg

You will notice that your battery has both a red colored and a black colored terminal , you jumper cables as listed as the same one red one black. Color coordinate them between the cars and you should have no problem. If in fact yo are color blind look for the + and - signs on the battery's Red is + black is -

hook both sides to a running car making sure not to let the other clamps touch each other then hook the positive then negative to your car. as for pain the only thing on a car that will actually shock you is pulling a spark plug wire off while it's running.
