why do rappers copy music made by others?

Either they are running out of their own ideas or they're just idiots trying to make money without effort.

Some recent examples i've found that really pissed me off were:
Sean Kingston- a fat idiot who copied led zeppelin's d'yer mak'er and made "me love' and copied stand by me and made "beaultiful girl"
another example is snoop dog copying the doors' 'riders on the storm' and then in the title writing the artist name as snoop dog featuring the doors (wtf)

all of the responses so far are interesting, except one i found to be ....different...
tee tub, you see rappers make all this money because there are people dumb enough to purchase their stupidity, so now not only is the rapper that copied the track talentless, the person buying the album also proves his/her stupidity. In reality they don't deserve to have a penny, there are people who have real talent like mechanics and programmers and architects without whom this world world have problems existing, but instead these talentless idiots are the ones with money, and it is annoying, but it's only a relfection of a major part of today's american culture. So although they might be richer, it doesn't make them smarter than my 6 year old brother or more talented than him in any way.

Just to add, in my opinion, rappers should give public credit to the artists they copy in the beginning of the song or somehow else.
so even though "beautiful girl' is a popular song, its really a rip off

by the way there is some good rap, but these specific rappers (most of them are the most recent ones) are just talentless crap

yes it's called a sample. i do enjoy some of my faves like Dr Dre ect. he does use a SAMPLE in a way,but he gets people to play the parts live to use them. I am not sure how many just use a sample kinda like that Vanilla Ice with Ice Ice Baby.

I do say it shows how talentless some are. But if you think about it it's not that bad if you wrote the song in the first place. Being you'd get paid for the song being a hit the first time and getting a sample and it HIT again,you get paid twice.

Back in the day, rappers like Dr. Dre and Ice T were trying to make a name for themselves. They did the hard work.

Now...you have all of these wannabes who don't want to put all of the effort into it. They can't even sing...rap whatever. They find a cool old beat and try to make money off of it.

You and me should do it. We'd make a lot of money and wouldn't even have to do anything...it won't even matter how NOT talented we are.

Because rappers haven't got much to say anymore! Once they talk about the ghetto, how poor they were, how rich they are now, how many hos they've got and how self-important they are, there is not much else for them to say, is there? So they copy others and say it's original.

I don't like today's rap much, overall. Overall they only rap about stupid things like their rims or their bling-bling. I don't want to hear about what you do with all your money, you rapper. Stop bragging about all your cars and stuff, cuz it's getting super-tiring.
