OK, I watched a show on The History Channel the other evening and it talked about the end of the world. It stated that several anciet prophets like Nostra Domas and ancient calendars from the Mayans and Chinease all predict the end of the world in the year 2012. More specifically, December 21, 2012.

The thing that made me really wonder was that in the year 2012, the earth and sun will be aligned with the exact center of the milky way. The show stated that as the earth passes into a different magnetic field, the poles will shift, in a matter of weeks or even hours. This would cause worldwide earthquakes and tsunamis, eradicating life as we know it.

Is this possible, or even true? Or is the History Channel passing specualtion off as truth?

close.
sounds like mythical star power cr@p to me.

but....

the earths magnetic field shifts polarity NORMALLY all by itself every 100,000 - 300,000 years

it doesn't seem to be a huge problem for long, but it could (MAYBE) cause atmospheric changes while it shifts.

(I think it could have killed the dinosaurs.)

we're due for one in like 500 years I think, but hopefully we'll be smart enough to survive it by then.

while it switches we'll have tons of aurora borealis all over the world, every night. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora_(astronomy)

once it switches everything will be ok. and no earthquakes.

but now if our melted spinning core of lava, either stops or freezes we'll lose the magnetic field and end up like Mars in the matter of a few years.
The sun would blow away our atmosphere like dust.

plus we'd have tons of earthquakes and volcanoes

It's obviously pure speculation / prophecy.

End of the world stuff comes up all the time. And has the world ended, as we've passed these other landmarks? Last time I checked, the answer was still no.

Sure, the ancients (Mayans especially) certainly were amazing in their astrological accuracy.

However, I fail to see how the alignment of the Earth and Sun with the center of the galaxy changes anything. While this might have been significant to ancients, who created gods / etc via these events in the astrological calendar, I don't believe it means anything.

The Earth's magnetic field is caused by the movements of the conductive metals in our core, and solar radiation and what not. The poles do flip every once in a while, but I don't believe it's going to occur in 2012. =P

Hope this helps.

Meh I doubt it. In 2000 everyone was worried about Y2K shutting down our computer system and plunging the world into a massive panic attack (still don't know why failed computer systems is a cause for panic...)

The point is, it didn't happen. After all that hype, the year passed normally.

Truthfully? I don't think it's gonna happen. Humanity has a morbid obsession with what the end of the world will be like (See: the day after tomorrow) and there is a huge sensation when someone says the world is gonna end. Good for ratings on TV. Personally though, I think it's all speculation. Like Y2K.

Being aligned with the sun would not change poles and changing poles would not cause natural disasters eradicating life. Also, the calendars were different but people believe these things that are irrelevant to what they are talking about. Nobody who believes things like religion has put any research or thought into it.

It is possible. A magnetic shift would cause a whole lot of damage. I doubt that it will be the end of the world though. Just maybe the end of life as we know it.

The only one who knows when the end of the world will come is God himself. A lot of men have guessed at it.....and anything is possible. But no one knows for sure. It could be today or tomorrow...just make sure you are ready when it happens. The only way to do that is to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Think about it.....

What makes you believe that if it is on the History Channel it is the absolute truth.

I think it's very possible. But we shouldn't worry about until the day comes. What if it's the begining of the "4th demention" or something? We won't know until the day comes. I'm not looking forward to it!
