My wife and I just bought a new house and noticed one of the cabinets is loose.

I'm thinking I can just re-screw it back up, but in a new hole.

I also noticed it only seems to be screwed into the drywall.

Isn't it supposed to be screwed into a stud?

This might seem like a stupid question to some of you, but I'm no "Mr Fix-It" to say the least.

Any input is appreciated.

Yes, the screws should be in a stud. A new hole will fix it but only temporary, you will have the same problem in a short time. If the existing hole is not too large you can use a drywall screw with a anchor.

for a photo of my recommended anchor, check out this url:

you can buy the matching screws and anchors in set packaging at any hardware store.

I prefer using a strong magnet but a stud finder, if used correctly, will help you find a stud. I also like to use a washer as well as a screw...there's a type called a Finish Washer, sometimes called a Beauty Washer. Choose one that lets the head of the screw fit into it...and DON'T use ordinary drywall screws, use wood screws with a good-sized head. A screw at the top of the cabinet and one at the bottom is usually sufficient.

Depending upon who installed them originally, they may have missed a stud. It's just a matter of locating a stud with a stud finder (electronic with a good depth range), find the outer edges of the stud, mark the center and then shoot some zinc #8 x 3" screws. You'll want a good drill with a fresh #2 Phillips bit to drive the screws. You can make it easier by piloting the screw with a slightly smaller drill bit.

they probably missed a stud iether you can buy a stud finder or else usally are about 16 inches apart.if you also tap on the wall you can somtimes tell where a stud is by the sound hollow sound or solid sound. but you can buy a stud finder any where from 8.00 on up.good luck.

You can either tap gently with a hammer until you think you can hear the stud, it won't be a hollow sound but, solid or, use a stud finder if you have one, that should do it.
