I'd be honest. I'll tell her that she's not American Idol material yet. But I'll help her find a voice coach. Heck, I'll even attend classes with her. I will let her sing whenever she wants. I'd still be her number one fan.
I'd be supportive but at the same time I'd save her from the embarrassment. I'd say, let's worry about American Idol later, after we're done with voice lessons, for now let's sing karaoke! ;-)
The key to note here is, you don't want to bring her hopes down much at the same time, you don't want to give her false hopes. So while you remain supportive, you just honestly tell her that she needs to practice more before she tries American Idol.
She would appreciate your honestly... just break it to her gently, okay?
Good luck.

If she's just singing for fun... no harm, don't say nada.
If she's serious about her singing and has all these plans for a singing career and wants to apply to American/Canadian Idol... recommend that she get singing lessons. Gently.

I use sarcasm for everything. Any time she's singing in front of you go to the extreme complimenting her. "O my god, you're like the best singer ever. You could give Christina Aguillera a run for her money. Are you professionally trained? You're singing voice is simply amazing." But make it obvious that you're not serious. She may never get the hint but eventually she will at least stop singing in front of you.

how close are you????
if nothing you could say will rok the friendship well there
BUT
if music/singing is her passion...
then you need to let her figure it out for herself
if american idol goes all hay-wire ad she blames you and accuses you of lying tell her that you never wanted to see the way she was so happy when she sung dissapear
good luck

You can tell her that you don't think she's ready for American Idol. If she ask when she'll be ready smile and say maybe never. If she doesn't listen let me know when she's going to be on and I'll get my DVR ready. LOL

Simply tell her nicely. Here, like this: YOU CAN'T SING, DUMASS. DID YOUR PARENTS THROW YOU AT A WALL AS A CHILD? I WAS TERRIFIED THE LAST TIME I HEARD YOUR DYING COW-GIVING BIRTH TO A WHALE VOICE. JEEZ, DO YOUR PARENTS EVEN LOVE YOU? I AM AFRAID. I WOULD PERSONALLY LIKE TO STAB YOU IN THE FACE AND RIP OUT YOUR MOUTH SO YOU CAN NEVER SING AGAIN AND THEN DO THE SAME TO MY ALREADY BLEEDING EARS. YOU PUTTHE B52 IS GOOD LIGHT. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, MICHAEL JACKSON? I HOPE YOUR HOPES AND DREAMS WERE CRUSHED AS HARD AS MY EARDRUMS. No hard feelings, right?

I think you should telll your friend point blank that she can't sing. You have to think about in this way: Should I let my friend go on tv and make a fool out of herself? A real friend would tell her that she can't sing and save her from the embarrassment

You should record her voice and then play it 4 her. If she thinks she sounds great then tell hr the truth. It might take time 4 her to accept it but at least you are doing the right thing.
