I am moving into an apartment in AS IS condition in order to get a discounted rental payment. I went in today to take a look at things to add onto my list of to do's and decided to take a real good look at the carpet. First, its dark red, a combination of red and maroon. Secondly, when opening the blinds to see the carpet I discovered there are dark colored stains all over the carpet. Then I took off my shoes to see how it feels and its hard. There are spots that feel soft and somewhat fluffy as this carpet should, however, the majority of the carpet is stiff to walk on and kind of sticky feeling. You can try to shampoo it, use the soap they sell you, add on cap of bleach and one cap of Dawn dish soap. We've been cleaning carpets all over the Vegas area for years and this has worked out fine.
The next day go in wth a straw broom and broom the carpet, do it one way only, works fine.

. It sounds like the previous renter had a bunch of dogs or kids who were dropping, er, things all over the carpet. When you steam clean this, after pre-soaking for several hrs, it's going to leave lighter stain marks ALL over the carpet!
The previous renter might have already tried to cover those stains up with some crap [spray-paint, shoe polish!, crayon..] so YOU will be UNcovering it!
SHOW your landlord the problem, tell him that you'll try to clean it at your own expense BUT you will NOT be responsible for the outcome!
Sticky/hard crap in the carpet is NOT good. The stry site below has good info. WD-40 might work! Experiment. .
