Take it to AutoZone and have them pull the codes to tell you why the check engine light is on.

The tranny dipstick is on the drivers side either in front of or near the rear of the motor. You check the tranny fluid with the engine running.

This will not make the check engine light come on. You might just be due for an oil change and the sensor or mileage tracker has turned the light on. Newer cars have a sensor that actually measures the contaminents in the motor oil and when it's dirty it's time for a change and it "alerts" you by way of the "check engine" or "service soon" light.

Good Luck!
