This is the tradition at the Indianapolis 500. One year when there was a female driver, the announcement was "Gentlemen and lady start your engines." I don't know where else this tradition prevails -- Couldn't be NASCAR: There aren't any "gentlemen" there, just good ol' boys.

this has been a nascar tradition for many years but when there is a woman in the field of drivers they will say "gentlemen and lady start your engines"

Becuse it's long standing tradition.
Also because it will mark the last instance
of gentility until the race ends.
