I'm trying to sync audio files to my MP3 player, but when I try my computer says "Windows Media Player cannot perform the requested action because there is not enough storage space on your computer. Delete some unneeded files on your hard disk, and then try again." When
I try to delete things to my recycling bin then it says "There is not enough space on the disc to perform this operation."

I have no idea what to do. Can someone help?

Get a memory card/stick that you will need to move files: just pick a sizeable folder, right click> CUT (not copy) and then paste it onto the card drive.

Then you should be able to free up some space.

To prevent this in the future: go to your D:\ drive in the MyComputer view and check its properties: under Disk Quota choose something like 1GB: so now when you have less than 1GB of space your computer will alert you to the fact.

to clear up additional space try this program, which will show you what files/folders are taking up space on your computer and where - much more quickly than you can in windows Explorer.

If you still are unable to delete, try transplanting your Hard Drive into another computer and clear the files from there.

And if all of that fails you may have to resign yourself to the fact that the drive will have to be formatted: COPY (not cut this time because if you're this far down the post, cut did not work) and paste your more sensitive files into a safe storage area, and then reformat your D:\ drive.

EDIT: I was out watching the new Bourne movie and for reason whatsoever I thought of your question again - but girl below me beat me to the chase:

The thought I had was that there are some things on any PC that you should be able to delete directly without recycle bin use.
The best ones are as Girl says; Temp files, cookies, old programs...

Another good way is to run the Disk Cleanup tool in your System tools folder (in Accessories) - if its able to: it should be able to compress some of your archived (rarely used) files and folders, to free up space.

And the last option I've exhausted is to go to your D properties again and next to Quota, there is a tab for virtual memory: DISABLE virtual memory allocation. Do the same thing for the tab involved with Recycling bin allocation, which may be in the Recyling Bin properties: I cant be sure because Im running an old 2000 machine at the moment.

To start with you probably need to back up some less used files to CD or DVD then delete them from your hard drive.
Sending something to your recycling bin does not remove it or free space. So empty your recycling bin. Also you can delete unused files by going to disk management and cleaning up old files, emptying your cache and temp files.
You did mention that is was your D: drive but most Microsoft applications do not recognize D: drives to check to see if this is not a problem on your C: drive. All MS software that I am aware of defaults to C:

First, empty your recycling bin. If D is a hard drive, then you may have to empty a lot of files to make space, although this is strange because your active hard drive is usually labeled C. If D is a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive, then the media (the CD or DVD) is not writeable. Use another disk.

Have you tried unloading some of the mp3 files on your player? Perhaps the computer thinks it's an external hard drive.

You will have to remove some programs. Look for things you don't use. You should consider buying a bigger computer.
