The grateful dead were / are legendary....you can't really compare them to the who.

Def Leppd rocked so much harder than GNR. Axel is friggin' weird as hell.

Metallica would be my pic over kiss. However, once again, not a good comparison...and I think Metallica sucks.

The Who over Grateful Dead. As for Def Leppard and G N' R they are both great in their own ways and I would call it a draw between them. And for Kiss and Metallica. like the group before, both awesome bands, but I would have to put Metallica first. It all depends though on what kind of mood I'm in.

It is so interesting that in all three of your comparisons you are matching up incredibly talented bands against bands that have a lot less.

Grateful Dead vs. The Who... The Who are one of the top 5 bands of all time that actually helped to define what rock would become... the GD were a bunch of hippies that could play but liked getting stoned even better.

Def Leppard vs. GNR... Axl Rose is an egomaniacal prick who imploded the best rock band of the past 20 years. Guns and Roses are really one of the best hard rock acts and their music stands up. Def Leppard played pretty schmaltzy pop-metal and really the success that they had is due to the production of Mutt Lange... I have been told that musically it is all they can do to play their own songs...

Kiss vs. Metallica? If you took the whole make-up and stage show away from KISS they are not even a good band. Poor music, poor lyrics... they put on a good show but they are closer to professional wrestling than they are being greatly talented. Metallica created a genre of music, forced it mainstream without major airplay on the Radio and have cut two or three of the defining moments in Metal over their career... they did not sell out.... they sell out world wide. They are arguably the biggest rock act since Zeppelin....

So lined up the way you have them in your question.... The Who, GNR, and Metallica smoke those other fools.
