If you buy live crickets, they will come in a container and enough food to last about a week or two. So you won't have to worry about that. You'll get about 25 crickets.

Most crickets that you buy in the pet stores are fed a powdered food just for crickets.
If you are going to keep crickets alive at your home you should have a low dish of gel that is full of water for the crickets to drink ( you can get that at the pet store also). I have kept my crickets alive and happy on flaked fish food and a few lettuce greens. They even reproduced and I had a bunch of baby crickets. I feed four leopard geckos and a bearded dragon so the reproducing crickets was like a bonus for me. Dust your crickets with a vitamin supplement once a week to give your gecko plenty of nutrients.

What you can do is a red potato. It will keep them alive about a week or two longer. What you do once you have a potato, put them in a closed box with a hole in the potato and you can either discard the peices left over or whatever. The first time I have done this the potato would crush the crickets whenever I would get them out to feed my beardy. Although if you are careful this wont happen. Also remember to sprinkle some vitamins on your crickets before you feed them to your gecko. Good luck.

Yes, your crickets will be worthless as food for the gecko if they haven't been properly fed themselves--a process called "gutloading". They make a powdered food for crickets (the gel kind is no good). Just place it in a shallow lid. Crickets do well in a large rubbermaid container with paper towel lining. You can use cardboard tubes or egg crates for hiding spaces. They also need a little lid of fresh water, or you can give them fresh fruits and vegies every day for moisture (I use water dishes--they drink a lot!). Your lizard will only be as healthy as the food he eats--and pet stores do not feed them well.
