Normally safety googles are required in chemical environments and/or potential side exposure. If googles are required because a job safety analysis has been done, there is no substitute for them. If the job analysis says either googles or safety glasses, you can wear regular or sunglasses with side shields added, if you get permission. It is all up the the safety officer or responsible party to make any deviation.
