I have lived in So.CA most of my life...left it a few times for San Francisco and then for Seattle. Let me tell you...So.CA is overcrowded, too expensive and if you live in any town that's NOT Los Angeles or SanFrancisco...it's as boring as N.C! There are beaches, and amusement parks, but you can only do that so long. Like everywhere, it's about your choices not what they have to do for fun. Being with friends is being with friends...that's anywhere.
Now about finding work and living quarters....L.A & S.F will cost a minimum of $1500 a month for a respectable studio apt. Work, the pay is slightly better than the Raleigh area, but by a small percentage. The cost of living will more than make up for the raise in pay. Gas is now at $2.99 a gal for regular AND to get anywhere (even the market) you need to drive. (San Francisco is a walking city unlike S.CA)
Depending on your age and whether you're going to college...well that would determine where BUT should you opt for So.CA, I will suggest the Long Beach area, around Belmont Shores...fun, trendy, a bit pricey...but great area. OR San Diego area...near any of the colleges. (not counting San Marcos...dull inland area)
A good resource is to request literature from the local Chambers of Commerce. Find areas that have a lifestyle that is compatible with your vision.
But think carefully and go to both places for a month and see if you like it. As for hurricanes in FL...those are a given...earthquakes in CA, maybe. In 15 yrs I've felt only one that "shook" the room for a couple of minutes.
Good luck in your decision making!

I didn't finish reading the question, but it seems to me your best choice would Be the location closest to home. Also consider if you want to train for a job or career which location would offer your best choice for that training.
Now as to the rest, I finished reading the question; neither location is less expensive unless you know someone to live with , or a small small town. In the big cities your cost of living will will be higher and possible cause you to lessen your expectations socially and block you into a lessor lifestyle. Now what kinda fun would that be. Find your happiness, but remember your own backyard is really best!

Both of those states are more expensive than North Carolina. Try doing something meaningful with your life, if you are bored. You can be bored anywhere, it's what you make of your life that gives it excitement.

Depends on where in Florida. Around Miami, it's expensive. Northern Florida is cheaper. Most of California is also expensive.
The real question is - would you prefer hurricanes or earthquakes?

well, they are quite different ....Depends on what you think is fun. Florida is most def cheaper, warmer. Cali obviously has LA, san diego, lots of celebs, hollywood. Florida has Miami, Keys, old people, and a hollywood too! Since you are in NC i can say Fl would be less of a culture shock, but i cant say thats what you are looking for.

They are both as expensive to live so think of earthquakes=California, Hurricanes=Florida... They are both fun and lots of people to socialize with.
