I'm selling a laptop. I've gotten many of the obvious Nigeria shipping scams, but I'm not sure about this one:

"Hello seller
how do you do? I am Phil all the way from the Uk, I work for a petroleum company(Chevron) in the Uk, I am in Mesa, Arizona for an official assignment after working here for two weeks now I will leave for Japan and I have spend a week now. My cousin who is schooling in a missionary school in Nigeria told me to get him a laptop for is studies.
He has been asking me for this but I dont have the time to send it to him because I am very busy, please I will really need your help in this transaction, I will like you to sell this item to me and help me send it to him in Nigeria, I will pay you for all the cost that requires both the shipping cost and the cost of the item just tell me the amount of everything I will pay you, tell me how you will get your money either by bank wire transfer or by paypal I will pay you everything you want. thanks"

Help? Sounds fishy.

Alright, so the consensus is that it's a scam. Now--I asked the guy to Paypal me a hundred bucks for "shipping"--is that illegal? Hahaha...

you are right, Smells like BS to me...
bank wire? that's a good way to get phished.
Paypal? only if the user has a confirmned address or whatever they use to verify an out of USA buyer as being legitimate. Nigeria? lots of scams, beware.

Of course you could check his IP address from the header info in the email to see where/what provider he's logged in to, but I'd pass on this one if I were you..

Have him pay you on PayPal and then withdraw all the money in your PayPal account. Also, make sure you send it certified or insured.....find out from the P.O. how to send it so you know it was delivered. Probably the next thing is that the bidder will say he never received the camcorder and demand a refund. Be careful with these Nigerians! I've heard lots of bad stories about foreign buyers and cheating the unsuspecting honest Ebay seller.

Please do not get involved with this person. I can tell you without a doubt this a scam. They are trying to get your personal info and identity theft is sure to follow. I have seen so many scams called the 419 scams that are used by Nigerians to try and get money or they have you agree to send packages from your address to their country and all with a stolen credit card. Your name is placed on the items stolen and shipped to your address. You can really wind up in a world of trouble if you aren't careful. Totally ignore this person and do not get involved.

They're all scams! I was a victim of them once. But if you really want to get rid of your lap top computer, I might be interested. Is it in working condition? Which version of Windows does it have? Or was it made by Apple? How much memory? What size of screen? How much are you willing to sell it for? I'm in California.

I know several government investigators who all say if your receiving any solicitations from Nigeria or many times Quebec, Canada it is 100% scam. Spread the word especially to the elderly

Maybe not. Have him put the money (be sure you charge enough for Overseas). Get the weight (add a little to be sure) get the zip code to ship to, then get the freight and ALL overseas documents cost from DHL -- then get the money into PayPal. Do not give him or anyone else your bank routing information. That's a sure way to get ripped off. After Pay Pal notifies you they have your money, transfer it to your bank. When it is IN your bank, then ship.
I've done lots of overseas shipping and it can be complicated. That's why you have to charge enough + extra just for the inconvenience, but most important protect yourself.
