I've always wondered about this.

Im buying my first car within the next week or so and its gonna be like a little cheap reliable car im buying directly from someone. Dont the person have to take the tags off of the car? If so how can u drive the car without tags? lol.

Also what do i have to do afterwards? As far as going to the DMV and registering?

Thanks

ahh I'm going to answer like i know your from USA

if your From USA, then your allowed to drive a car home as long as the Private seller has written you a bill of sale (name, signatures, date of sale).
any cop that pulls you over must not ticket you in these situation as it falls under 1 time private shipping type things.

This is all you have to do
1.Call insurance company to make sure on policy.
2.drive home.

Most insurance companys insure your cars for 10 days. so buy it and get it home right away

if you go to staples or any document type places.. they actually sell bills of sale for you and seller to fill out to make it all legal and such.

if your still afraid, then just get a friend with a trailer to tow it home, but remember all the towing laws ;)

The seller keeps their plates and signs the title over to you. You fill out the purchaser information and either go to the local DMV office or mail the title in with applicable sales tax, title & license fees. If you mail it all in, you should do it the same day or the day after you purchase it and keep copies of all paperwork in your glovebox in case you get pulled over. If you go to the DMV, you should get plates immediately (even if they are just temporary plates) depending on where you live and what type of DMV office it is. Either way, as long as you have proof that the plates have been applied for in the vehicle when you get pulled over, you're usually okay. If you have to wait for your plates, it could take 6-12 weeks.

in some states the tags belong to the car and others they belong to the person who last owned the car. find out what your state does. if the tags go with the person who is selling your car then as long as you have a bill of sale then you are allowed a certain amount of time to go to the dmv and register it in your name and get a tag for it.

Since you didn't say where you are, what country, or if in the US, what state, I cant answer your question. I'd suggest you contact the DMV or what ever it's called where you are, and ask. Remember to have insurance in place before you drive one inch.
