You would need one heck of a big mono-directional antenna.
You could dial in to your computer from the shop, but then your speed drops greatly.
A VPN will not work if you don't already have Internet, which is why your asking this, I assume.

There is no short answer.
But, understand this: DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) essentially only defines the twisted-pair wire technology that allows you to use otherwise ordinary telephone lines to add digital data capability to your computer without interfering with the use of your telephone. It facilitates networking, otherwise it has nothing to do with networking whatever.
Also, when you say you want to network to your husband's shop 2 miles away, I'll have to ask, "Why?" Only when you have a very clear idea of the answer to this question will you be able to determine if in order to accomplish some specific business goal (!) you absolutely must have a network.
Don't let anybody sell you any equipment that is supposed to do this. It can be done alright. And since you already have a DSL connection and computers on distant ends, you have everything you need.
But, again, if you are designing a network, it must have a stated purpose which determines how the network is to be designed.

There are no routers that I have ever seen that can send a signal that far. Usually the maximum is an office building, maybe down the block, something along those lines. Sorry but I don't think it's possible.

Look into setting up a Virtual Private Network.
You don't need any special equipment -- just Internet.
Alternatively, you can have your router host the VPN.
