I am going with a friend to Vegas on the night of my 21st birthday later this month. We have a standard room booked at the Luxor. Do you think making it known that it is my 21st, I will be able to get a free upgrade?

Using the $20 trick will give you a much better chance of actually getting that "complimentary" upgrade.

When you hand the desk clerk your CC & ID ask if there are any complimentary upgrades available, make sure she/he sees the $20 in your hand.

A Pyramid Spa Suite would be a very nice upgrade

She/he will say, "I can't do that/There are no rooms available/It will cost you X amount" in which case you can pony up the difference or take what they give you. On the other hand, if you're checking in Sunday through Thursday you have an excellent shot of having him/her saying "let me take a look" in which case you're probably in luck.

When he/she hands you the room key to your suite, you say thank you very much and give him/her the $20 handshake.

This is the way things get done in LV.

Good luck, if you have any Q's feel free to e-mail me through YA.

I have a few $10 free play and 2-4-1 buffet coupons left, most are only good until 8/31 and I'm not going back to LV until December, if you would like them let me know(YA e-mail)

We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years.

Later: The next time a desk clerk in LV turns down money I offer them will be the first time.

I stayed at the luxor when I went for my 21st, I didn't notice any problems. I'm sure you could nitpick one hotel vs. another since there are sooo many there, but I didn't notice anything negative. (except because of the design I got lost a lot in the casino are trying to find my way to my elevator and out...but that's not something that is going to ruin someones experience trust me)....It is at the far end of the strip but that doesn't matter, it's connected on the inside with a path to mandalay bay, and you can walk over to exaclibur. There are many hotels walking distance on the strip. Depending on what you want to do you can always take a cab (which is not too expensive) to the other end of the strip. They also have the tram. Your daughter won't be trapped inside of the hotel, she'll probably want to get out and go all over, and as far as I noticed I had no complaints.

It's worth asking. However, I would do it before you check in - such as, call the hotel this week and ask for the name of the front desk manager and their fax number. Send them a fax telling them it's your 21st birthday, and your first trip to Vegas, and you're choosing to spend it it at Luxor, and ask if there's anything they can do to make your trip more exciting, you'd REALLY appreciate it!

If you wait and do it at check in, they may not be able to help you - if the hotel is sold out, there's nothing they can do.

Show them you just turned 21, and wouldn't want to stay and celebrate it ANYWHERE else. They represent the #1 class act. You also plan to gamble there. It's an odds on favorite they'll comp you. Go for it. The #1 KEY to pull this off properly, is to dress approiately. NOT jeans and leisure TYPE matching shirt. Jacket, NICE shirt shirt, and tie. It's a rite of passage you'll be able to look back on. A good time is going to follow. Do this, and roll the dice once. It's really easy to do to make it happen.

The "$20 trick" is unlikely to work. Front desk agents are monitored on camera and by what they do with room inventory. Their may be one or two agents that might try to get away with it, however most of these people have good jobs that they wouldn't risk for $20 or even $200. I have been in the hotel industry to long to do it myself. If I can upgrade a guest with permission from management, I will, regardless of what the guest tips me.

This is a very stupid question. Why in the world would you want an upgrade in Vegas. You will never be in your room.

Ask them. If you sell it well enough, you may get an upgrade. Just let them know you will be spending money there.
