Yes it is free at Autozone and other parts stores. There is no commitment, all you have to do is tell them that your check engine light is on and you would like to scan the vehicle for codes. However, they don't scan all vehicles...only newer models. I think 95 and up, I am not sure though.
Good luck!

Sorry for zaorox99's answer. He is dead wrong. They will test your car and thats it. If you need a part, they would hope you buy from them, but it is not necessary. Since most Autozones do not have a "back room" they test the car in your presence so there is really no effort to lie to you.

Yes, they do free diagnostic tests at Autozone. All u have to do is just tell them your check engine light is on or whatever and they will hook ur car up to the machine. It just takes a second, and u dont have to buy anything....it is FREE!

I've used it a couple times before with an old car I had..you just go in and tell them your check engine light keeps coming on and they will check it...you're not required to buy anything..there's no catch..I had a car that the light kept coming on and it turned out to be that i needed a new gas cap and as soon as i got it my light stopped coming on...so it definately helps out when you need it...

This has always been my biggest problem with AZ. there is a huge differance between a "Code Read" and a true "Diagnoses" that little hand held scanner only reads codes. A true diagnosis is testing parts pinpointing the true failure. the code points in a direction to start diagnosing. your problem could be a loose or broken wire. there is no way that little reader could see that. other possiblilties are clogged port, leaking injector or just needing a tuneup.

Well, if they say it's not free, then go to Aamco; I heard they'll check out that "check engine" light for free many times before on the radio.

First off, I'm not an employee. The Zone has improved. Parts competition has gotten harder. They go the distance. I wouldn't go anywhere else. They want your business. Once you find out, you'll stay with them as a happy customer knowing they're on your side. Give them a chance. You won't be disappointed.

you need to ask them to "rent" one of those code readers( i forgot what they are called) They charge you a deposit, and you get the deposit back when you return the tool. If you can drive the car there and do it in the parking lot sometimes they wont bother doing the transactions because it only takes a few minutes and its pointless to charge someone and then refund them 2 min later.
