i bought a hard disk wiping software from office depot, but it tells me that it deletes everything including the installed OS. can you tell me if there is a way to do that? if i cant wipe the disk without deleting the OS, i need to do a partition on the HD. what is partitioning?

If you don't know what partitioning is, why do you think you need to do it? It would be better to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall the OS in any case. You get rid of years of accumulated junk in Windows by doing a clean install. If you're doing it for security reasons, try Evidence Eliminator. To really get rid of data without totally wiping the disk you have to redo file tables and clean the tips of partially filled clusters and a lot of other things. Just wiping the drive clean (including the OS) is a lot simpler.
That software you got was a ripoff. The OS install disk it makes you have could have done the same thing for free.

format the disk. partitioning means to divide up your hard disk to different sections.
